The Great Pyramids of Egypt - Giza. The modern suburbs of Cairo are visible in the background. (March 19)
There are three pyramids at the Giza Necropolis, the largest of which is the Pyramid of Khufu (Cheops), built over a 10 to 20 year period around 2560 BC, i.e., over 4,500 years ago. This makes these pyramids younger than those at the Saqqara Necropolis. This necropolis includes three Great Pyramids. (Def: necropolis)
This shot shows that the pyramids were covered with a limestone "sheath," visible on the top of the pyramid on the right. Much of this outer layer of stone has disappeared over the centuries.

This closeup of tourists climbing about on the exterior of a pyramid reveals the size of the stones piled up to make a pyramid - they are nearly as thick as a person is tall.
A view of Giza and Cairo from the grounds of the pyramid. Our tour bus is one of those to the right in the parking lot.
